Happy Newyear!

I've been working on learning to make the perfect caramels, and this year I hope to get there... Every batch I make turns out different, but at least there are some perfect batches in between failures...

Some turn out as sauce (yummy) others are rockhard. What I've learned so far is: to use a thermometer: the sugar should be heated to 160 degrees to still be a little soft, at 170 it turns into rocks, and to not put too much cream in it (sauce)

What I do now is: pour (cup of) sugar in pan with a pinch of salt, with a spoonfull of water, stick candy-thermometer in and heat to 160 degrees, then add some cream and a lump of butter, and pour into molds.

garlic soap?

making a mold for a garlic shaped (not garlic scented, sorry) soap. bought a big net of garlic to select the best bulb, peeled a few layers away and covered it in several layers of latex.

cut a hole in the lid of a small bucket the size of the rim of my latex garlic mold to support it while pouring the soap in. first soap is on its way now, and the second mold (to get a small production-line going) as well!

title of the soap will be: YOU STINK! (i think) and it is scented with rosemary and lavender...

1 make mold with clay

2 make soap, pour soap

3 carefully take out of mold when still a bit soft

4 add piece of cotton rope, press on tabletop to flatten

5 join halves, align properly

cauliflower molding progress

used the clay mold for a cement cauliflower casting and 2 soaps. after the second soap the mold was destroyed, but I am using the cement cauliflower now to make a new rubber mold. 4 layers of rubber are on it now, I heated the cast a bit in the microwave to make the rubber dry faster, so i could apply 2 layers in under 15 minutes... next day (today) another two, tomorrow i will finish it.

Slaughtered a cauliflower to make a mold. Of course to be used for pouring soap. I like the idea of finding a piece of cauliflower on the sink.

This is just a test with flexible clay. I will probably use a plaster cauliflower casting to make a more permanent silicone mold...

recycling doll hands and feet

i found this doll a few months ago and took her home with me. She looked too sad laying there in her underwear on the bin in the street.
today decided to cut her hands and feet off and make molds of them. filled them with cement so they'll be heavy enough not to float to the surface when i pour silicons over them.
I'm sure I can turn them into a small edition of very cute coat hangers for kids. don't know the material to make them with yet, but i'm sure i'll figure that out too someday soon.

With stichting Kunsteiland we are building huts in the playground at Heijplaat, with materials donated by the builders and demolishers active in the neighbourhood. A large part of the houses there are being torn down, and new better ones will be built. During this proces stichting Kunsteiland wanted to do something positive for the residents and created this childrens project with a lot of reuse of materials.
Children are building happily to make their own dreamhome...

Spent a lovely sunny day yesterday drawing visitors of a community festival in Schiedam with my portrait booth.
Ended up doing around 60 drawings, a lot of them, but not all, can be seen in my flickr stream.

cassette tape mold-making

I predict there will be cassette-tape shaped SOAP in the near future in some shops in Rotterdam.

Had this idea but threw all my old tapes in the garbage a few years ago when I had to move. Good friend tinyloops still had his complete selection and gave me one. Lubricated the tape with some liquid soap and pressed it into black silicone. Hoping for the best now. I will let it dry for as long as I can wait, patience is not my virtue.
Also watch the recycled container ;-) it came with cakes in it...

I spent last weekend with the drawing booth drawing people at the Camping Rotterdam Festival. Through all kinds of weather everybody kept their spirit up, as well as their drinking. Witnessed lots of people sinking in muddy fields, having hair curled and toenails polished at the beautysalon and then playing outdoorsy games, with rainboots or bare feet in the mud. can't control the weather, but the party must go on.

I made the portrait cabin as a drawing installation to use on location. There is a camera lucida installation inside that makes a reflection of the model on your paper, so you can draw very fast. The model has to sit in the cabin for 1 or 2 minutes, and in this short time the portrait has to be made. Drawing fast results in very loose drawings but at the same time they have a good resemblance of the model.

this is my design for a fence art project with the theme Creativity liberates, that will be presented at several big festivals in the Netherlands this year. I chose to use 3d objects that will be painted all in the same color and sawn in pieces to place it through the fences around the festivals. This way representing the idea that the fence is not an obstacle anymore...

We are talking about me making a stand based on this design where the organising foundation will work during the festivals.

first drawing made in camera lucida installation that we started building to draw portraits during festivals and parties. when finished the installation will look like a photobooth, on one side the model is sitting on a stool, on the other side we will be drawing portraits. this very fast first drawing took about a minute to make and made me very happy when I saw the result. when I give it a little more time they will look even better.

not nearly finished, will post result (booth) when we are ready! First image is the 3d-design.

made these colored eastereggs and don't know which one I like best!

cooked them in water with green food coloring (and a little bit orange) and after after that tapped all of them so the color could bleed into the eggs, let them cool down in the colored water, then peeled them.

The eggs may look great, but it will be some time before my hands are not green any more...

This afternoon I attended the concert that schoolkids gave in the prestigious Doelen concert hall. They had musiclessons this year thanks to a nice program that was set up to introduce children to playing a classical instrument. it was very touching. lots of proud parents filming, children concentrating. and of course the presentation of the plan accompanied by my statue. proud. :-)

home made vacuum-molding

vacuum table

made a vacuum-table to make small molds using an old vacuum cleaner and a box with small holes in the top. worked very nice, but now I have to find the perfect material to make the molds with. I did a few tests with plastic bags and plastic milkboxes but nothing perfect so far. It would be nice if I could use materials that would otherwise be waisted.

The idea is that you heat the plastic with a paint stripper and then lay it over the mold that is on the vacuum table. the air pulls the plastic down nice and tight as it stretches over the mold.

So far no perfect results but I will keep trying. Already picked up some paintcan-covers from the trash in the street while cycling to my studio. Will try those tomorrow :-)

finished 6 beanstalk self watering containers in cleaning buckets. deconstructed the mop to make it wick the water from the bucket up to the soil. when they grow up the beans use the stick of the mop as a beanstalk. I think it's a goodlooking installation. can't wait for beans to grow!

growing vegetables in the window of my studio in old milk-containers. I cut them in half and inverted the top half into the bottom, put an old strip of a cotton shirt through what was once the opening we poured the milk from and filled it with soil and seed.
Put a lamp right above it for extra love (it is after all only februari) and poured lots of water in the bottom half. now they feed themselves and don't need too much attention.

the next photo is of a page from the dutch Millionaire magazine. interesting to see that even in this target group home gardening is considered the hip thing to do. Now they have the money to buy the most exclusive sets, I am planning to make my ghetto garden look pretty with recycled materials.

this was a birthday present for the father of the soon to be filthy rich t-shirt empire director slash designer slash logistics manager.

another ghetto print project, where we printed by transferring printed letters to adhesive plastic, then cutting the letters and silhouette for the altered logo and pasting it to a t-shirt.
applied textile paint with a brush and after drying removed the plastic.

the design is an adaptation on the Maggi logo, it reads 'magnie', phonetic dutch for mag niet: 'not allowed'.

the nice young man (13) that thought of this design wore it to school the next day and none of his classmates believed that he made the t-shirt himself.

he is planning to start a t-shirt empire and become filthy rich.

I've been working on ways to print t-shirts at home without expensive screen-printing materials, and this is one of my ghetto-screen prints. it is made by drawing on net fabric(old curtains) and painting everything that has to stay white closed with acrylic paint, letting it dry and applying paint through it to in this case paper, but I've also used this technique for printing t-shirts.
the drawing is inspired by old Russian fairytales, where the house of baba jaga, the witch, was always twisting around on chicken legs.
